Updated: Oct 24

Article by Jenna Nash, Resolute Realty

Boise, Idaho, has quietly become a hidden gem for LGBTQ+ individuals looking for a friendly and vibrant place to call home. Known for its blend of urban charm and outdoor adventure, Boise offers a community where all residents can thrive while enjoying

everything from the bustling downtown to the Greenbelt and Ridges to Rivers trail

system in the foothills. Whether you’re into exploring nature or enjoying queer friendly spaces, Boise has something for all.

Downtown Boise is the heart of the city’s LGBTQ+ scene, offering welcoming spaces where you can connect with others and enjoy the city’s culture. You will find inclusive businesses downtown or in one of our charming neighborhoods (check out Hyde Park).

Grab a coffee downtown at Broadcast Coffee or the Flying M, both popular haunts for our community.

Want to dance the night away and/or enjoy a cocktail? There are several clubs and bars to gather with friends or meet new people. Located on a rooftop on the popular 8th Street Promenade, The Balcony is one of Boise’s premier LGBTQ+ friendly nightclubs. It offers drag shows, themed nights, and a lively atmosphere where everyone is welcome.

Another favorite is Somewhere Bar offering a more laid-back atmosphere with friendly staff, great drinks, and an inclusive space to unwind.

Boise is home to several LGBTQ+ community groups and events, fostering a sense of connection and belonging. With a robust line up of events support groups and a lending library, The Community Center has been providing a safe, supportive and fun space to socialize and build community for over 40 years. Boise Wonder Women is one of several Meetup group that brings together queer women for various activities, from book club and hiking to game nights, offering a safe and supportive space to meet new friends. Additionally, The Pride Foundation Idaho and Add the Words Idaho work to support and advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, making Boise a progressive city when it comes to inclusion.

One of Boise’s biggest draws is its proximity to nature. The Boise Greenbelt, a 25-mile stretch along the Boise River, is perfect for biking, walking, or just enjoying the scenic views. For those who love hiking, the Ridge to Rivers trail system provides endless trails that wind through the Boise Foothills, offering stunning views of the city and surrounding mountains. Whether you prefer a casual walk or a challenging hike, Boise’s is surrounded by natural beauty.

For residents and visitors who love adventure, Boise offers access to outdoor activities like whitewater rafting on the nearby Payette or Salmon Rivers. Boise’s location also makes weekend getaways easy, whether it’s relaxing by Payette Lake in Cascade or McCall, or skiing at any number of nearby ski resorts including Tamarack, Brundage, Sun Valley and Bogus Basin in the winter.
